Florida Car Insurance
Florida No Fault Car Insurance law required the following minimum mandatory insurance coverage:
- $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – This insurance covers you in an accident regardless of who is at fault, and pays for portions of costs such as medical expenses, lost wages, and resulting child care expenses. PIP also pays a $5,000 death benefit.
- $10,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL) – This portion pays for damage you or a family member cause to others while driving. ‘Property’ may include fences, buildings, cars or telephone poles.
These figures actually represent the absolute minimum you would need however under most circumstances you would want significantly more coverage than this. With so many cars on the road worth in excess of $50,000 it doesn’t take much for a car accident to run to tens of thousands of dollars in damage. You could lose a lot more than your car!
If you own or have registered a vehicle with at least 4 wheels, you must obtain Florida car insurance. There are no exemptions in the law. It is illegal to drive without car insurance in Florida and if you do so, your driving privilege can be suspended by The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for up to three years or until you provide a proof of Florida auto insurance.
If you are deemed responsible in a car accident, you may be required to have Bodily injury liability insurance.
Depending on your circumstances it might make a lot of sense to actually look at beefing up your auto insurance policy. Why not consider these options:
- Adding collision and comprehensive coverage if you think you might struggle to meet the costs of replacing or repairing a badly damaged vehicle.
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist insurance coverage.
- Adjusting your deductible to help offset some of the additional costs.
